Why The NASW Code of Ethics Matters To You

LCCS has adopted the National Association of Social (NASW) Code of Ethics as a guide to shape our policies, strengthen our daily practice, and support ethical, transparent, and culturally responsive service delivery. During times when conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion may feel uncertain or confusing, the Code clearly outlines our professional responsibilities to serve all individuals and families with dignity, fairness, cultural understanding, and respect. These expectations remain constant, regardless of external changes or shifts in language and ideology.

Reinforcing the Code helps ensure that staff continue to provide services that honor each person’s background and lived experience. It also supports a consistent standard of care across the agency and strengthens our commitment to ethical practice, cultural responsiveness, and equitable treatment of all families.

Relevant NASW Code of Ethics Citations (Exact Language)

1.05 Cultural Competence

“Social workers should understand culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths that exist in all cultures.”

“Social workers should demonstrate cultural humility and sensitivity to the dynamics of power and privilege in all social interactions.”

1.05(d)

“Social workers who provide services to clients should be culturally competent and should have the knowledge and skills to work effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds.”

4.02 Discrimination

“Social workers should not practice, condone, facilitate, or collaborate with any form of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, or mental or physical ability.”

6.04 Social and Political Action

“Social workers should act to prevent and eliminate domination, exploitation, and discrimination.”

“Social workers should be aware of the impact of the political arena on practice and should advocate for changes in policy and legislation to improve social conditions and promote social justice.”

Why This Matters for Daily Practice

  • It supports staff in providing services that honor dignity, fairness, and cultural awareness.
  • It ensures consistency in how families are treated across the agency.
  • It reinforces our responsibility to avoid discrimination in all forms.
  • It helps staff stay grounded in professional values when external conversations or expectations may shift.

Reaffirming these standards helps maintain clarity, strengthens ethical practice, and ensures that our work remains centered on the well-being of children, families, and the communities we serve.
