October marked SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and Safe Sleep Awareness Month, and Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) has been working hard to educate families on the importance of safe sleep for infants. In partnership with several community agencies, LCCS is committed to raising awareness and providing resources to keep babies safe.
“Ensuring infants have a safe sleep environment is one of our top priorities,” said Director of Social Services, Chanda Beal “We want every family in Lucas County to have the knowledge and support they need to practice safe sleep and reduce the risk of SIDS.”
One key initiative is the distribution of safe sleep information to families at their first meeting with an LCCS caseworker. This information includes brochures and materials on creating a safe sleep space, as well as connections to community resources and services. Caseworkers also discuss safe sleep practices during home visits and observe where children are sleeping.
In 2022, LCCS created a Prevention Specialist role to specifically support families with infants who have been prenatally exposed to substances like marijuana. Prevention Worker, Danette Popovich, works closely with these families to develop a Plan of Safe Care, focusing on harm reduction strategies and promoting safe sleep.
“A big part of my role is educating parents on the importance of safe sleep, even if they are continuing to use substances,” said Popovich. “I provide hands-on guidance, safety supplies and information on where to get a pack n play, and connections to treatment and other community resources to help keep these infants safe.”
LCCS Chief Counsel, Shelby Cully, also serves on the Lucas County Child Fatality Review Committee, which examines child deaths in the community. The committee uses this data to identify patterns, gaps in services, and recommendations to prevent future tragedies – with a strong emphasis on safe sleep education.
By working collaboratively with our partners, we’re able to reach more families and make a real difference in safe sleep practices across Lucas County. Babies deserve a safe sleep environment, and we’re committed to providing the resources and support to make that a reality.
