Internet Safety

While the internet can be an educational and enriching link to the world, there is an increasing safety risk for children’s when they are online. Internet predators have increased in number and can make the internet a dangerous place for children without the right precautions.

Keep track of the amount of time your child spends online, and limit it. Keep your computer in a common area of your home. Use an ISP (Internet Service Provider) that allows for different levels of access for children. Ask your children who they are “talking” to when they participate in instant messaging.

There are several signs that your child may be at-risk online:

  • They spend too much time at the computer.
  • You find your child on the Internet after bedtime.
  • Your child quickly changes the screen when you walk into the room.
  • You receive phone calls or packages from people you don’t know.
  • Your child becomes withdrawn.

Protect your child by teaching them not to give out any personal information and not to click on links in an email from people they don’t know. There are many ways to safeguard your computer through software that monitors and/or restricts your child’s Internet access.

Keep your child safe while they explore the virtual world of the Internet. Resources
